A while ago, I bought a Jelly Roll featuring The Nest by Tula Pink for Moda. I love the fabric. So colorful and fun. It sat in my storage tub for a good year, and that’s just sad. When I was The Quilt Store I bought the Pure Love quilt pattern (for the Pure fabric collection) that I had thought to apply this fabric to.
After I cut half the nest strips, I realized this was simply not going to look the way I wanted it to. It would look too colorful too close together.
There’s a neat project in the moda back shop called topsy turvy quilt that takes a layer cake and skews each of the sides and applies a white border to it. I think I’m going to adapt that for the nest blocks. Add some white space and set off the crazy cool patterns in the nest collection.
The nest blocks will end up being 6″, so I think I’ll apply a 1″ white border to each block. I have cut enough nest fabric to yield 80 blocks.
I don’t have a lot of confidence in my ability to improvise, match, and coordinate color, so I told the husband my grand plan and he says sounds good. So we shall see! I’m excited to see where this goes. Could be awful, could be awesome.
